A Longmont man accused of trying to stab a man and cutting a woman following a road-rage incident in the summer is now set for trial in May.
Jorge Yanez-Venegas, 22, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon, first-degree assault-extreme indifference, second-degree kidnapping, two counts of felony menacing, DUI, violation of a protection order, child abuse, resisting arrest, reckless driving, throwing missiles, not using child restraints, driving with an open container, attempted second-degree assault on an officer, obstructing a peace officer, third-degree assault and four sentence enhancers.
According to court records, Yanez-Venegas is now set for a five-day trial starting May 17. He is also set for a motions hearing on April 5 and a pretrial readiness conference on May 5.
He remains out of custody on $7,500 bond.
According to an affidavit, a man was driving south on Main Street in Longmont on May 28 when he saw a red and gray truck driving recklessly behind him. The man said he pulled over to let the two trucks pass, but found that they were all headed to the same mobile home park, Countryside Village on Collyer Street.
The man said that as he drove by the two trucks, which had now parked in front of a home, Yanez-Venegas threw a rock at his car as he passed by. The driver got out of the car to confront Yanez-Venegas, who reportedly threatened to kill him.
According to the affidavit, Yanez-Venegas pulled a pocket knife out and tried to stab the other man. A woman, identified as the driver of the other truck and the mother of Yanez-Venegas’ children, tried to stop him and was cut on the hand in the process.
Witnesses said Yanez-Venegas then dragged the woman into the home by her hair.
A neighbor reported seeing Yanez-Venegas throw the rock and the ensuing fight. Yanez-Venegas’ mother was in the house and reported seeing the woman come in with a bloody hand before she and Yanez-Venegas took their children and drove off.
When police responding to the attempted stabbing pulled over the truck, Yanez-Venegas and the woman reportedly refused to cooperate, with Yanez-Venegas trying to kick an officer and the woman trying to go to Yanez-Venegas while she was being handcuffed.
A 2-year-old child holding a bloody shirt was found unbuckled in the car, while an unopened can of beer was found in her diaper bag.
Yanez-Venegas was also not supposed to be in contact with the woman, according to a court order.
