The Kansas City Chiefs have a few players vying for playing time behind star tight end Travis Kelce.

One of those players is free-agent acquisition Ricky Seals-Jones. He’s going into his fourth season in the NFL, after spending time with the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns. Now, in Kansas City, Seals-Jones is trying to soak up everything he can from Kelce. He told reporters on Tuesday that he’s trying to pick up one thing of Kelce’s in particular.

“His flow for the game,” Seals-Jones said. “How he knows the whole playbook and how he can get other people open just by him being out there and that’s a big thing. This offense is not just based on one player and Trav knows how to – if the routes coming to him or away from him, he can do things and just open up that window for another player, pick a guy and I just take that from. He’s a smooth player. You can never really just get your full hands on him and I just try to look at my game and try to take some of his game from him and put it in mine.”

Seals-Jones caught 14 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns last year in Cleveland. He worked to take complete advantage of showcasing his skills during the limited opportunities in training camp. He feels he’s been able to show the Chiefs the type of player that he can be in their offense.

“I think so, just with the reps that I’ve been getting and just making them count,” Seals-Jones said. “Balls coming my way, make a catch, make a guy miss, so I feel like every time I’m out there I’m like ‘Hey, you know you don’t get many opportunities so make this one count, and then just worry about the next.’ It’s been difficult you know, not coming in and having OTAs, to get a jump on a playbook and kind of playing catchup, but it is what it is and just got to hit the ground running.”

Kelce has undoubtedly played a role in getting Seals-Jones prepared within the Chiefs offense. He’s a strong leader in that room. Andy Reid and tight end coach Tom Melvin lean on him to help with some of the newer guys.

“He’s a great player, he’s a great teammate, a big leader, helps us out any way he can and that’s all you can ask from him,” Seals-Jones said of Kelce. “You know, just come in every day and he gives his 110 percent just like we are.”

It might take 120 percent effort this year to make a competitive Chiefs roster, but like others vying for a roster spot, Seals-Jones has given it his all as he awaits word on whether he’s made the 2020 team.
