CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Earlier this summer, Coral Springs began testing its first responders and other employees for the coronavirus as part of a research study meant to determine how many people in the community were infected with the virus.
In the latest round of testing released in late August, out of nearly 500 city employees tested:
- Eighteen may have had Covid-19 and developed protective antibodies, which scientists believe remain valuable for at least three months.
- Four may have been recently infected and developed an early immune response.
Coral Springs officials, who provided the testing information in a news release, didn’t reveal the positions of employees who may have been infected.
In addition, 65 rapid “antigen” tests were performed on city employees and it was determined that 13 tested positive for antigens.
Coral Springs’ Medical Director Dr. Peter Antevy said the antigen tests were done in 15 minutes – “a game-changer.”
“Although we continue to work to validate the testing accuracy, if it proves to be a success, we will be able to test employees and receive results without having to wait days for results,” Dr. Antevy said in the news release. “This kind of innovation would allow us to reach a level of normalcy in our city and, just as importantly, would preserve the continuity of operations.”
