Washington's depth at safety was suspect at best, so when Landon Collins went down for the year, it was fair to wonder where on earth this team was going to get solid production out of that spot.
Enter Kamren Curl, who has not taken over the job at strong safety but run with it as he's starred in a Washington defense streaking its way to the top of the NFC East standings.
It's a long way to come for a rookie seventh-round pick, but as Curl said on Washington Football Postgame Live, he's not ready to reflect on his accomplishments just yet.
"It's kind of hard to process, I really don't want want to process it all right now," Curl said. "I'm trying to stay in this little zone, I don't want to sit back and say, 'I'm really in this' because I'll probably get too comfortable."

Curl has made a name for himself this season by doing the little things. He's always in a good position, he flies to the ball and has been an exceptional tackler, especially in the run game. In Week 14 against the 49ers, the little things turned into a big play, as he recognized Nick Mullens' tendency to panic and throw to the flat, picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown.
Washington's strength on defense has been the front four led by Chase Young and Montez Sweat on the edge. After struggling through the early part of the year, the secondary has come along to help turn this unit into one of the best in the game.
But there's no time to celebrate for Curl or the rest of the defense. There's still three games left and a division to win.
"I'm just going week-to-week, team-to-team I'm just going with the flow, trying to get better every week," Curl said.
