A newly released county report shows that over 118,000 pounds of litter were collected in May across Marion County.

The Solid Waste Operations Report for May 2021 was released on June 16 and sheds light on a variety of solid waste statistics.

Among those is how much litter is picked up across the county and by whom.

According to the report, during the month of may, inmates from county and state institutions collected over 22,000 pounds of litter over the course of 536 man hours.

Staff and county contract employees collected a little more than 27,000 pounds of litter.

Community service workers gathered the largest amount among all groups, collecting a whopping 43,293 pounds of litter during the month of May.

The report also shows that just over 34 tons of recycling tonnage were collected at multiple recycling centers around the county, including Baseline, Dunnellon, and Fort McCoy Recycling Centers, to name a few.

The report comes in light of a recent push by county administrators and local agencies to place renewed focus on littering and illegal dumping.

Earlier this year, Marion County Commissioners teamed up with Marion County Sheriff’s Office to warn residents that illegally dumping brings with it the possibility of fines and even jail time.

The Marion County Board of County Commissioners has also created a new Litter Task Force that it hopes will spread knowledge about littering to help keep Marion clean.
