SCHENECTADY — Judy Tomisman of Niskayuna was thumbing through pages during a well-attended book sale outside the Hon. Karen B. Johnson Library when she noticed a COVID-19 vaccination point of dispensing clinic on Sunday.
As the number of deaths related to the coronavirus continue to climb throughout the state, Tomisman was among the steady inflow of traffic into the Schenectady County clinic.
Like Tomisman, most were there for Pfizer booster shots, the criteria being patients had to be at least 65 years old and received their second vaccination six months ago. Booster shots were also available to teachers and medical professionals.
Tomisman said her daughter postponed her wedding planned for this month until next year out of concern that the delta variant would prompt another stay-at-home order by the state.
“I couldn’t in good faith plan a wedding knowing this could happen, and it wouldn’t be fair to my family, particularly the older people in our family,” she said.
“I’m very concerned that if we don’t band together and follow protocols as far as masking and social-distancing — if we don’t get our vaccinations — then we’ll never really be able to get this under control,” Tomisman added. “I realize it’s never going to go away 100%. But I think there are steps that we can take to manage it and keep everyone safe.”
As of Friday, the state announced that:
- 22 New Yorkers, including one in Schenectady County, died of COVID-19, bringing New York’s death count to 44,610
- 25 new cases were reported in Schenectady County, bringing the countywide total of positive cases to 15,738
- Saratoga County had 63 new cases, bringing the countywide total to 19,070
- The Capital Region’s positive test results was 3.6%
- 690,028 residents of the Capital Region completed their vaccine series
Gov. Kathy Hochul said of the state’s progress combating COVID-19:
“We’re working to protect New Yorkers from the continued spread of COVID-19, and the vaccine is the central tool in that ongoing effort.
“New York state is taking action to keep our children, parents and families safe from this terrible virus, but there’s more we have to do,” Hochul said. “Getting New Yorkers vaccinated is vital to rebuilding our economy and fostering a healthier future for all of us, so I urge everyone who hasn’t taken the shot yet to do so immediately.”
