Some local shops also noted that they saw more traffic on Friday compared to years past.

Asheville businesses and shoppers are welcoming the change, saying that it puts a spotlight on what makes the city special.

"It not only boosts our local economy, but it also helps keep Asheville unique and thriving," said boutique consultant Morgan Lindsey.

"We live here, it's friends, it's family, we all know each other up and down Lexington," said a production assistant, Patti Byrd. "And it just keeps the revenue supporting us, supporting our friends and our family and our town."

"I can go to any name brand store and find some super cute stuff, but I think these things that I'm buying for my nephews, you can't find that anywhere else," said shopper Mariana Rosales.

The November through December shopping season accounts for about 20 percent of retailers’ sales for a full year.
