Not really surprising that May was a cold one, after all, we did receive over 5 cm of snow on May 11.

The University of Waterloo Weather Station released its monthly summary on Wednesday evening, and it shows temperatures were around one degree below average.

That makes it the coldest May since 2008, as temps. went from one extreme to the other.

The weather station says we dipped to -4.3°C on May 9 (tied for third lowest May temperature in the 100+ year history of weather records in the region), then on May 26, we hit almost 32, making it the fifth warmest May day on record.

Meantime, the snow on May 11 was not the latest snow we have received - on May 18, 1923, Waterloo Region was blanketed with 9 cm of snow.

May was also an average month in terms of precipitation.

Summary for May 2020:

  • Maximum Temperature 31.8°C
  • Minimum Temperature -4.3°C
  • Average Daily High Temperature 17.2°C (Long term average 18.5°C)
  • Average Daily Low Temperature 5.9°C (Long term average 6.4°C)
  • Total Precipitation 85.2 mm (Long term average 82.3 mm)

The winner of the UW Weather Station Contest guessed it would hit 20 degrees for the first time on May 16, which is the latest the temperature has hit 20 in May since 1919.
