BEREA, Ohio -- More than 1,000 alumni and family members gathered at Berea-Midpark High School for a final walk-through on Sunday (June 7).
The original Berea High School building was constructed in 1928 and underwent numerous additions throughout its history at the corner of Eastland and Bagley roads. In 2013, the former Midpark High School Meteors and Berea High School Braves consolidated and became the Berea-Midpark Titans.
A new Berea-Midpark High School will open this fall. It is situated directly behind the current building, which will be demolished.
Alumni roamed the hallways -- with cleveland.com in tow -- while maintaining social distancing and wearing masks.
"It's a little strange," said 1978 Berea High School alumnus Dave Hartman. "It's sad that the building is coming down. I guess its time has come."
Gary Harris, a 1976 BHS graduate, recalled being required to take swimming class in the high school pool, while Hartman said the pool was “not (his) favorite place.” Hartman did say, however, that the chocolate-peanut butter squares served in the cafeteria were always a hit.
"The game plan was to see if you could throw them and get them to stick to the ceiling tiles," Hartman said with a chuckle.
Interestingly, the high school proms were held in the BHS cafeteria back then. The high school tower on the building’s front facade was off limits, they said, but amorous classmates still managed to sneak in for a quick rendezvous. They added that BHS students even had a smoking lounge back then.
