CHARLESTON, W.Va. — COVID-19 positive test numbers continued to increase Sunday on the eve of what could be an announcement from Gov. Jim Justice to make the wearing of masks mandatory in some public places in the Mountain State.
Numbers released Sunday evening by the state Department of Health and Human Resources show an increase of 73 cases from the Sunday morning report.
The state’s daily positive test rate has climbed to 3.58 percent. The number of active cases is now at 806, the highest since early May.
The DHHR is also reporting a 95th COVID-19 death, that of an 84-year-old Greenbrier County woman.
“Each death reported is a solemn reminder of the seriousness of this disease. We send our sympathy to this family and urge all West Virginians to follow,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said.
Justice said last Thursday he was seriously considering a mask mandate for public buildings where social distancing could not be achieved. He indicated that it could also cover bars and restaurants. He promised a decision at Monday’s media briefing.
