SHOREHAM, Vt. (WCAX) - State fire investigators say a Shoreham man who died in a fire at his home Monday may have started the blaze.
It happened around 8 a.m. on Elmendorf Road. Authorities say a passing motorist heard a loud explosion and saw flames coming from the home. While extinguishing the blaze, fire crews found the body of who they believe is the homeowner, Howard Jerome Sr. , 85.
Police Tuesday say the blasts were most likely from four, one-pound propane tanks used for camping. They are now investigating whether he died by suicide. Family members told police Jerome had early onset dementia and missed his deceased wife.
Detectives say the amount of devastation from the fire makes it hard to determine the actual cause. “The fire is undetermined, the origin is the two back bedrooms, but the fire will remain undetermined,” said Vermont State Police Detective Sgt. Todd Ambroz.
He says Jerome had placed personal items outside the home, including the title to his car and the keys.
