thekflow.blogspot.com

Schools are beginning to announce whether they will remain closed or open to students on Wednesday, May 19, following severe weather.

Below is a list of school districts in Acadiana and their decisions:

Calcasieu Parish

All Calcasieu Parish School Board schools and facilities will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19.

"With areas of our parish still dealing with flooding and more rain being predicted, we feel this decision is best for the safety of our students, faculty and staff. In addition, we know that many of our staff members and families are dealing with flooding issues in their own homes. We will notify families tomorrow as to the status of school on Thursday, however we do anticipate reopening all schools and facilities."

Jeff Davis Parish

All Jeff Davis Parish schools will be canceled tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19.

According to Assistant Superintendent John Hall, around 50% of the parish's bus routes remain impassible.

Lafayette Parish

At this time, all LPSS schools will reopen for in-person learning on Wednesday, May 19. LPSS staff continue to collaborate with weather officials regarding Wednesday's forecasts; if the weather worsens, officials will reassess the decision and notify parents by 5:30 a.m.

St. Landry Parish

As of now, all St. Landry Parish schools will be open on Wednesday, May 19. Officials are continuing to get information from the National Weather Service and will monitor the weather and road conditions throughout the night to determine if roads are unsafe for travel. Administrators will notify parents/students if closures are in effect.

Students who are unable to attend due to weather conditions will be excused. Please communicate absences with your child's school. If you feel like conditions are not safe, you always have the option to keep your child home, administrators say.

Vermilion Parish

At this time, all Vermilion Parish schools will be open on Wednesday, May 19. Superintendent Tommy Byler tells students if high water conditions still exist in your area or if buses are unable to pass, students will be excused from school, but asks that students communicate with the school. Also, if the electrical outages in Gueydan caused issues or if students left their home, they will also be excused.

Byler says he is continuing to monitor the weather and is in contact with the National Weather Service, and adds that the latest report of possible rain amounts could cause this decision to change by the end of the night.

"Remember you are always the final decision as to the safety of your child and if you feel like conditions are not safe always have the option to keep them home."
