RIO GRANDE VALLEY – After six years as a part of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) throws program, not many things are new to graduate student Paul May.
During his illustrious career, May has been a center piece to the growth of the program in recent years as he has done it all.
Well, almost all.
May's swan-song season continues as he is set to compete in the shot put on May 26 and discus on May 28 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium, making him the second UTRGV thrower to ever qualify in multiple events.
"I've never been to the west preliminaries before so I don't really know what to expect," May said. "From what I've heard, you only get three throws to make it count so I just have to stay levelheaded, don't let the emotions get the best of me and utilize those three throws to the maximum of my ability."
After narrowly missing out on competing in the NCAA West Preliminary Round in the shot put in 2018, by less than eight inches, May is excited to add another accomplishment to his mantle as he remains focused on the task at hand.
This next step in May's career has garnered him plenty of praise from family, friends, teammates, and his throws coach, Brad Foote.
"To see the hardwork that he's put in and then see the result of that hardwork, it's just great," Foote said.
After years of attempting to reach this point, May has definitely earned his spot and he values the opportunity to represent UTRGV, as he has done for so many years before.
"It's not too often that we get to perform on that platform, so it means a lot to be up there as a senior and put UTRGV on my back and perform for us," May said. "It's definitely a great achievement and I want to make sure I get the most out of it. I want to give my teammates something to cheer about when I get back."
LEGENDARY
During his prestigious career May has consistently shown out within the rings holding seven, five, and four of the top-10 throws in program history in the shot put, discus and hammer throw, respectively.
This includes holding the top marks in the shot put (18.09 meters) and discus (55.84 meters).
"He'll be a legend here," UTRGV head coach Darren Flowers said. "To be at that level in all three throws is incredible. You don't see it very often. I'm just so proud of him and what he has done for this program."
May's success over the years has not gone unnoticed, as his award shelf is filled to the brim. During outdoor competition alone, he had earned 2016 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year, 2017 and 2021 WAC Men's Outstanding Field Performer of the Year, 2016 and 2018 WAC Discus Champion, 2021 WAC Shot Put Champion, and five All-WAC First Team selections.
"All my coaches in general – my high school coach, Coach Foote, Coach Flowers… I definitely appreciate all their help and they've definitely pushed me to make it this far," May said.
Coupled with incredible success in indoor track & field, including 2020 WAC Championships in the shot put and weight throw, a 2018 WAC Championship in the shot put, five All-WAC First Team honors, two All-WAC Second Team honors, and two WAC Athlete of the Week awards, the 2020 UTRGV Athletics Male Legacy Award, the 2018 UTRGV Male Student-Athlete of the Year award, and having earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Education in Educational Leadership, May has embraced and surpassed what it means to be a student-athlete.
