The City of Greenville and the owners of the historic Flat Iron building at 1207 Pendleton Street have proposed a public-private partnership to bring new sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, parking and a public arts plaza to the Village of West Greenville.
City staff met in the Village on May 4 with Katie and Erik Skoloff, the owners of the Flat Iron building, to garner public feedback on the proposal.
“Our goal is to not only increase foot traffic but to grow the visuals of the Village down further,” said Katie Skollof, who serves as principal designer with In Site Designs, which will be occupying the Flat Iron building once renovations are complete. “We want to be a landmark and we’re working hard to grow the Village and bring more people down to get to know this arts district.”
The plan would add new street lighting, sidewalks and irrigated landscaping outside the Flat Iron building, also known as the Triangle Building, starting at the corner of Burdett and Mason Streets and would wrap around the block back to Pendleton Street.
With the street changes, the intersection of Burdett and Pendleton Streets would be transformed into a public arts plaza, assuming the plan receives final approval from the City of Greenville and the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
City Real Estate Development Manager Mary Douglas Hirsch said the consensus among the roughly 30 local business owners and village residents who attended the meeting was to ensure Mason did not become a cut-through street with traffic coming off Pendleton Street.
“The feedback, so far, has all been very positive,” Hirsch said. “Business owners and residents all wanted to make sure whatever we do would help business in the village.”

The terms of the public-private partnership would have the city reimbursing the Skoloffs up to $349,000 for the improvements.
The plans passed through first reading at Greenville City County on Monday, May 9 and could receive final approval on May 24, at which point construction will begin shortly thereafter.
