Albany metro jobless rate drops to 4.3% in May - The Daily Gazette

ALBANY — The preliminary unemployment rate in May was 4.3% in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy region, tying it for second-lowest among the state’s metropolitan areas.

The May 2021 jobless rate compares to 10.5% in May 2020, at the tail end of the partial economic shutdown to slow the pandemic, and 3.2% recorded in the pre-COVID days of May 2019.

The New York state Department of Labor reported the numbers Tuesday. They are estimates, and are not seasonally adjusted.

Among the New York metro areas, unemployment ranged from 3.6% (Ithaca) to 9.8% (New York City).

At the county level, unemployment ranged from 3.5% (Yates County) to 13.5% (Bronx).

Here are the unemployment rates for select counties in and near the Capital Region for May 2021 and May 2020:

  • Albany 4.3% 10.3%
  • Fulton 5.5% 12.1%
  • Montgomery 5.7% 11.8%
  • Rensselaer 4.3% 10.1%
  • Saratoga 3.7% 10.4%
  • Schenectady 5.0% 11.7%
  • Schoharie 4.3% 9.3%

Elsewhere in May 2021, unemployment stood at 5.5% nationwide and 6.9% statewide.
