AURORA | Authorities have arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder in connection with a shooting that left one woman injured late last month.

Aurora police said Wednesday that authorities outside of Colorado have arrested Marquis Davis on suspicion of shooting and injuring a woman he knew near the intersection of East Highline Drive and East Lansing Street in Aurora May 23.

Officials did not say where Davis was arrested, nor when he may be extradited to face charges in Colorado.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will prosecute Davis whenever he is returned to the state.

The woman who was injured in the shooting was shot in the arm and is expected to survive, police said.

The shooting adjacent to the High Line Canal Trail spurred city officials to hold a safety advocacy walk the day after the incident occurred. Former Aurora City Councilwoman Debi Hunter Holen joined Police Chief Vanessa Wilson and other officials on a roughly two-mile jaunt while they discussed safety in the area.

Hunter Holen was attacked with a wood board while walking along the trail last summer. She sustained serious injuries that resulted in her receiving more than 30 staples in her scalp after police said 23-year-old Julio Cesar Gonzalez assaulted her with a plank of wood last July.

Another woman was hit with a piece of wood by a different, unrelated assailant on the same trail the same week Hunter Holen was attacked.

The shooting last month occurred beside — but not directly on — the Aurora pathway, which is owned by Denver Water that bisects the southeast portion of the metro area.

Overall, major crime is up 40% so far this year, with 6,427 incidents of what officials designate the most serious crimes reported through the beginning of May, according to Aurora police statistics.

Yet most criminal incidents have not spilled onto north Aurora’s trail systems, according to Sgt. Tom Graham, the police area representative for the city’s north District 1.

“We really haven’t had a lot of problems up there,” he said. “ … Every now and then something will pop up.”
