For the first time in nearly seven years, a Giants starter has been named the National League Pitcher of the Month.
Kevin Gausman, who went 5-0 with a 0.73 ERA in 37 innings in May, earned the honor Wednesday and became the first member of a Giants staff to be named a Pitcher of the Month since Madison Bumgarner in August, 2014.
Gausman struck out 49 batters in May and extended his streak of allowing one run or fewer to eight consecutive starts. The right-hander’s best outing last month was the only start of his the Giants actually lost as Gausman tossed eight innings of one-run ball and racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts on May 14 against the Pirates.
Gausman’s performance in May is even more impressive considering he’s dealt with right hip tightness that has lingered for a few starts and required him to be removed after throwing six scoreless innings against a loaded Dodgers lineup on Sunday.
Prior to Bumgarner, who won Pitcher of the Month in May and August of 2014, the last Giants starter to receive the honor was Tim Lincecum for his efforts in June, 2009. Lincecum was named the National League Cy Young Award winner in 2008 and 2009 as he led the majors in strikeouts in both seasons.
Gausman ranks second in the majors in bWAR (3.5) and ERA (1.40), fourth in WHIP (.807), fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.22) and 10th in innings pitched (70 2/3).
The veteran righty signed a one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer to return to the Giants last offseason and is slated to become a free agent at the end of the 2021 season. At the rate he’s currently pitching, there’s destined to be interest within the organization’s front office to sign Gausman to a multi-year extension after the season is complete.
