New York City called for a “Key to NYC Pass,” which is like the Covid-19 passport talked about a few months ago. It's a carrot-and-stick approach, as people will be required to show that they are vaccinated. If not, they would be denied entrance to an array of establishments. This week, San Francisco required both customers and employees to show proof of full vaccination to enter bars, gyms, restaurants, sporting events and concerts. Now, it looks like companies are requiring job seekers to show proof of vaccination when applying for a new position.
According to Indeed, the large job aggregation site, “As of August 7, the share of job postings per million that require vaccinations were up 90% compared to a month earlier.” The job board noticed that “vaccination requirements in job postings are increasing across a wide range of sectors, including software development, marketing, education and sales—many of which had not previously mandated vaccines.” In one particular sector, software development “postings requiring vaccinations increased by more than 10,000% in July from February 2021.”
For now, job postings that demand vaccination requirements represent only a small percentage of the total listings. However, the trend, according to data from the job site, demonstrates a substantial increase in listings that call for proof of getting your shots. It's not relegated to only one or two sectors and the postings stretch across a wide array of industries.
To illustrate the swift shift in job advertisements, back in February 2021, software development ads had only 3.5 job postings per million that stated vaccination required. Fast forward to July and the number has skyrocketed to 437.9 job postings per million, representing an increase of more than 10,000%. The same holds true for areas such as accounting, retail and marketing.
It appears that the new surging spread of the Delta variant has hastened the need of companies to call for vaccinations. “In the seven days ending August 7, the share of job postings per million that require being vaccinated against Covid-19 explicitly is up 34% compared to one month prior. Job postings that require vaccination but may not explicitly specify Covid-19 follow the same trend, up 90% over the same time period.”
AnnElizabeth Konkel, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab with a focus on the U.S. labor market, said, “While the number of postings requiring a vaccine is still low, it’s a trend that’s really taking off.” Konkel added, “I think a growing number of employers are trying to keep workers safe and do not want to shut down again this winter. They see vaccines as the way out of this pandemic.”
Some workers don’t have much of a choice, as their employers have already made the decision. Facebook, Google, Twitter, Morgan Stanley, CNN, the Washington Post, United Airlines, Microsoft, Uber, Netflix, Walgreens, Tyson, Walmart and Disney told all or a segment of their workforce to get their shots. It makes sense for companies to come down on a strict policy, as they face considerable risks and liabilities. If a person contracts or spreads Covid-19, a lawsuit against the firm may follow.
The public is greatly divided between the people who advocate for shots and those who vehemently push back against getting vaccinated. This holds true in the workplace too. A study from Qualtrics asked people what they’d do if their employer mandated getting vaccinated. The results clearly show the chasm between Americans. About 44% of workers said that they would consider leaving their jobs if they were forced to get their shots. Around 38% of workers would consider leaving their current employer if the organization did not enact a vaccine mandate.
Given the divide, we might see applicants either specifically searching for jobs that require vaccinations. Others may avoid these opportunities, due to their beliefs on privacy, liberty and a penchant for not wanting to be ordered by an employer over what to put into their own bodies.
Although the job market has dramatically improved since the rollout of vaccinations, with over 10 million new jobs recently added, there is still a significant number of people opting out of the search for work. Businesses—ranging from mom-and-pop restaurants to large multinational conglomerates—complain that they can’t find enough talent to fill their open roles and meet customer demand. One of the major reasons cited for the lack of workers is the concern for catching and spreading the virus. The fear of contracting Covid-19 has made people shelter safely at home.
Companies contend that by including vaccination requirements, it will bring back workers into the job market. It could also work in reverse. Some businesses may boast that they won’t require vaccinations to entice people to apply for jobs with them, as there is a war for talent and they need the help.
