Style, fashion, and prevailing trends in home design and décor change on a regular basis, just like trendy jeans.
While you may struggle to keep up with high-rise, mid-rise and hip huggers, when it comes to your house, it’s not as easy as cleaning out your closet to make way for those mom jeans you never thought you’d own again.
When it comes to selling your house, you might as well go with the flow instead of fighting against it. Here are a few examples of out-of-style (currently) elements you (or someone you know) may be dealing with and how you might own it rather than disguise or deny it.
Those glass bricks that form one or more walls in your master bathroom shower may not be as fashionable as the waterfall tile inset seen in the model homes down the street, but covering them up with a shower curtain or hiding them behind a giant plant won’t solve the issue. A better option might be leaning into the “light and bright” effect by decorating with white towels, white bathmats and a tasteful white flower arrangement on the counter.
Rethink the conversation pit in your formal living room that currently serves as the staging area for folding laundry, the cat box or your Peloton bike. Instead, consider adding a footstool with a tray set with beer mugs or teacups to own up to the outdated design feature. Heck, it might be attractive to a family looking for a way to connect in person rather than engaging via electronic devices.
The Saltillo tile that constitutes the flooring in your family room, dining room and kitchen cannot be hidden beneath blue and green geometric design area rugs. You might be able to neutralize the orange effect by going with Swiss Coffee on the walls and decorating with white and espresso accents pieces.
The hand-painted fruit and vegetable tiles someone, in a galaxy far, far away, handpicked for the backsplash in your kitchen might be covered up with special tile paint to match the surrounding tiles. Just remember to read your Seller Property Questionnaire, page two, item number 6-D regarding the disclosure of any part of the property painted within the last 12 months.
The lime green and lemon yellow ceramic tile that adorns the walls and shower enclosure of your hall bathroom might benefit from the same paint treatment you used on the kitchen tile and would subsequently become subject to the same disclosure obligation (depending on the timing.)
Alternatively, you may decide to go with the flow and decorate the bathroom with bath towels featuring a lemon and lime design, yellow and green bathmats and accessories and lemon and lime prints on the walls.
Buyers usually fall into one of two camps when it comes to out-of-style homes. They either see it as an opportunity or a liability, and as a seller, this is totally out of your control. So just go with the flow.
