The Orlando Magic officially entered a rebuild during last season’s NBA trade deadline. Orlando dealt Evan Fournier, Aaron Gordon and most notably, All-Star center Nikola Vucevic to contending teams.
Vucevic is one of eight players for the Magic ever to be selected to the NBA All-Star Game. A two-time All-Star, Vucevic joins Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee Hardaway, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis among Magic representatives.
There are however, several other players for the Magic who played in All-Star games before their Orlando tenures. In a two-part series, we look back on some former All-Stars that you might have forgot played for the Magic.
We start with the guards:
Gilbert Arenas
Tenure with Magic: 2010-11
All-Star Appearances: Three (2005-07, Washington Wizards)
Overview: Many may remember Gilbert Arenas’ time in Orlando more for his contract than what he accomplished on the court. The Magic were desperate to make a move when they acquired Arenas midway through the 2010-11 season. Arenas was known as a big-time scorer in his prime with the Washington Wizards, but averaged just eight points on 34% shooting in 49 games with the Magic.
B.J. Armstrong
Tenure with Magic: 1999
All-Star Appearances: One (1994, Chicago Bulls)
Overview: A sharpshooter during the early parts of the Chicago Bulls’ 1990s dynasty, B.J. Armstrong put together an All-Star campaign during the season following Michael Jordan’s retirement. After the 1994-95 season, in which Chicago was eliminated by Orlando in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Armstrong became a bit of a journeyman. A portion of that journey was spent with the Magic. During the 1998-99 season, he played 22 games for Orlando, but averaged just 8.2 minutes and 2.2. points per game.
Chauncey Billups
All-Star Appearances: Five (2006-08, Detroit Pistons; 2009-10, Denver Nuggets)
Overview: Chauncey Billups never appeared in a game for the Orlando Magic – only a team picture. Acquired in a trade from the Denver Nuggets that sent Tariq Abdul-Wahad to the Rocky Mountains and Ron Mercer to Orlando, Billups would go on to be a five-time All-Star and the 2004 NBA Finals MVP with the Detroit Pistons.
Mark Price
Tenure with Magic: 1997-98
All-Star Appearances: Four (1989, 1992-94, Cleveland Cavaliers)
Overview: One of the purest foul shooters in NBA history, Mark Price was a four-time All-Star with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His last season however, was spent playing for Chuck Daly and the Orlando Magic. During the 1997-98 campaign — the final season of a stellar 12-year career — Price averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists.
Reggie Theus
Tenure with Magic: 1989-90
All-Star Appearances: Two (1981 and 1983, Chicago Bulls)
Overview: Before Michael Jordan was taking the NBA by storm, it was Reggie Theus who was the face of the Chicago Bulls. Only fans since expansion will remember Theus in pinstripes as he was an inaugural member of the Magic. During his time in Orlando, Theus played in 76 games and made 71 starts. Theus averaged nearly 19 points and a team-high 5.4 assists per game in his lone season with the Magic.
