The company Totes Goats has been bringing nearly monthly goat yoga to Hazelman Farms in West Milford since the spring of 2017.
During the morning class this past weekend, beginner yoga poses were taught to attendees, as they got a chance to stretch alongside four African pygmy goats.
For yogi Jamie Marchioni, of Clifton, it was a new experience exercising next to the animals. “I’m surprised how calm the goats were. It is cool to co-exist with the animals while having a causal workout.”
Sometimes the goats have their own mind on where they want to stand during the class. Student Maria Papa learned this quickly when the goat Namaste decided to use her back as a ladder to get closer to feed on the leaves of a nearby tree.
For instructor Natalie Giardina, who has been teaching goat yoga with Totes Goats for the past 4 years, it is a “Great way to connect with nature and animals since we are one. It’s always fun during the classes to just go with the flow and surrender and have fun.”
Farm owner Rocky Hazelman teamed up with Totes Goates owner Tyler Morella as a way to bring more people to his farm and connect them with animals and nature. The farm is also started more agrotourism events like a recent big farm to table dinner.
