As Norwegian seafood exports crumbled for a second month in a row, France is boosting imports of Norwegian salmon as it foodservice sector gets a break from coronavirus-related lockdowns.
"After freedom of movement was restored on May 11, the export volumes to France have increased," said Trine Horne, the Norwegian Seafood Council Fisheries Envoy to France.
"We can expect a further increase, as restaurants throughout France could reopen from June 2. In the Paris region, which is a populous area, there are currently only open-air restaurants that are open.”
Exports of Norwegian salmon to France dropped 11 and 12 percent in March and April respectively. But exports saw a shred of light in May as Norwegian salmon exports to France increased 4 percent year-on-year to 8,976 metric tons.
In addition to the growth in exports to France, processing markets in Poland and Denmark also took in more Norwegian salmon in May for the German market.
Overall in May, 85,000 metric tons of salmon were exported worth NOK 5.7 billion (€535 million/$600 million), which is 5 percent less in volume and value against last year's figures.
However, year-to-date export value of Norwegian salmon has actually increased 2 percent, while volumes are at the same level as last year.
