Clive James had already put into words his feelings about the nearness of death in his 2014 poem Japanese Maple.
“Your death, near now, is of an easy sort,” he wrote, reflecting on the cancer that was spreading through him. “So a slow fading out brings no real pain.”
His family announced yesterday that the man famed for bringing erudition to journalism and broadcasting died on Sunday at home in Cambridge at the age of 80. They said that he was grateful to have lived so long despite having leukaemia, kidney failure and lung disease.
