Another week down, another week closer to planting season being complete. This week was go-week as farmers in the area were rushing to beat the rain that was in the forecast, only to be relieved when the rain never showed up and they could keep trucking along. This week was a lot of late nights for my fiancé, many nights not getting home until 2 in the morning. I try my best to stay up and make sure he makes it home safe and sound, but a lot of times I end up falling asleep on the couch and waking to him telling me to go up to bed.
I keep my phone within ear shot, though, in case I get a call for a seed or parts run. This also makes for a lot of tractor dinners. In times like these, I get creative with what I bring, something easy to pack, but filling enough to keep you going through the night. My favorite last week was making Italian beef sandwiches complete with homemade French onion dip and potato chips. I’m always looking for different ways to adapt our favorite meals so they are tractor friendly.
The school year has ended for most teachers, but for ag teachers that just means it’s time to start SAE. An SAE is a Supervised Agriculture Experience which allows students to take what they have learned in their ag classes and apply it to real-world experiences. This year, we have a kid that has started their own fish farm and is getting that up and running, we have another student taking care of the FFA sweet corn plot and we have lots of kids using their 4-H project for an SAE.
SAE visits look a little different for ag teachers this year due to the pandemic, but we will adapt and make it through. That’s what life is all about, dealing with every curveball thrown your way and learning to adapt with it. Trying to always look to the brighter side of things, if this pandemic has done anything it has taught me to roll with the punches and learn to go with the flow. Hopefully, you all are able to find at least one thing throughout your time in quarantine that you may have taken for granted before or at least find your silver lining.
