A royal source has come forward to say there may have been concerns the Royal Family would “exploit their popularity when convenient”, leading the pair to feel they had no option but to quit the royal family, as the source said they felt “trapped” by their constrained lifestyle.
The insider told the Daily Mail: “They felt that the institution only wanted to trot them out to exploit their popularity when convenient.
“Otherwise it wanted to constrain because it was jealous and threatened by their popularity.”
While another confidante told how the couple “felt the family just couldn’t handle them”.
They added: “The felt trapped and believed senior establishment figures, including William, were trying to derail them.”
It comes as reports that Prince Harry and Meghan blindsided the royal family.
Royal reporter Rebecca English wrote: “Unknown to anyone, the couple had in fact been ‘plotting’ life outside of Britain.”
Shortly after Christmas, Prince Harry informed aides of his plans to step down, before emailing his father and the Queen of his decision.
The monarch was said to be unhappy with this decision.

They added that Archie had been “loving doing FaceTime playdates with other small children they have in their lives".
Archie has been their rock during this particularly uncertain time when they can not see members of their family.
The source said: “Archie 'brings a great deal of joy' to both Prince Harry and Meghan during 'these scary times.'"
It comes as reports that the pair are currently living in a large new home in the Los Angeles area.
The pair have reportedly also looked at a £20 million mansion in Malibu, where Princess Diana is reported to have wanted to live.
However, the Daily Mail has said they plan to rent an eight-bedroom Tuscan style mansion so that Meghan can be close to Hollywood agents.
The £20 million mansion that the pair allegedly viewed is in a Malibu neighbourhood near to where Dodi Fayed bought a villa right before his fatal crash with Princess Diana.
Back in 2007, former royal butler Paul Burrell spoke out about Princess Diana's wish to move William and Harry out to Los Angeles.
He said: “This is our new life, just won't it be great, think of the lifestyle the boys — nobody's judgmental here in America, you don't have the class system, you don't have the establishment.”
