The claimant count in the U.K. rose by 528,900 in May to 2.8 million, the Office for National Statistics said Tuesday. Since March, 1.6 million people more people have sought either jobseeker's allowance or universal credit for searching for a job. The unemployment rate in the three months to April edged up 0.1 points to 3.9%, while the number of employees in the U.K. on payrolls in May is down over 600,000 compared with March.
