City of Alexandria officials are asking residents to tell them what they love and hate about Duke Street.
According to the City's Duke Street In Motion website: "The City is excited to kick off Duke Street In Motion, a project focused on ensuring that transit improvements in the Duke Street corridor, from the Landmark Mall area to the King Street Metro Station, provide efficient transportation options that align with all users’ needs, wants, and expectations."
Already, residents are piping up through social media to complain that Telegraph Road backs up onto Duke Street, and voice concerns about losing any traffic lanes to public transit, which has seen a major decline in usage since the coronavirus pandemic hit. Right now, there are no plans to remove lanes currently used by cars.
"The community will create a vision for this corridor to steer the eventual outcome of improvements related to public transit, such as the bus, as well as other related improvements for walking, riding a bicycle, driving, and using micromobility (for example, shared electric bikes and scooters),"according to city officials.
Duke Street has become a critical east-west thoroughfare, particularly since Seminary Road went on a diet and there remains no mid-city access to Eisenhower Avenue. Duke Street provides the closest access to the Beltway and residents frequently complain about cut-through traffic on Duke Street from out-of-state drivers.
In July of last year, the the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) gave the City of Alexandria $75 million in from the 2020-2025 Six-Year Program. This funding will be used to help construct the first phase of improvements identified in the planning and public input phases of the project.
