Heading into the Tennessee Titans‘ second preseason game of the Summer, one of the questions on everyone’s mind was how the young guys would do with so many of the starters sitting. Sure, we know who the stars are on this team, but for Tennessee to really make some noise in the AFC, they’ll need Herculean efforts from some of the role players.
That means, even though phasing a talent like Derrick Henry out of the offense isn’t a wise strategy that’s going to fly, it would be nice, with the number of carries he’s had over the past two seasons, if Tennessee had a complementary piece to spell him from time to time.
They may have their answer in a guy that seemingly came out of nowhere. They certainly weren’t looking in his direction.
Mekhi Sargent may have won a spot on the Titans roster.
With the spotlight on guys like Darrynton Evans, Jeremy McNichols, and Brian Hill, Mekhi Sargent was an afterthought in the Tennessee Titans’ backfield battle. That is he was an afterthought until Tennessee’s first preseason game versus the Atlanta Falcons.
He went for 58 yards on 16 carries in that one. What did he do for an encore? He shined again and turned the pressure cooker up on guys like Hill with another dominating performance.
Try 16 carries for 78 yards on for size, and if that wasn’t enough, he helped get the scoring started for Tennessee, showcasing his ability as a receiver by way of reaching the end zone on a five-yard touchdown toss from the arm of Matt Barkley.
His spot on the roster will probably come down to how he performs on special teams and in pass protection. Believe it or not, despite the fact that there’s only one preseason game remaining, we’re a long way from the finish line. The battle is getting intense for the Titans tailbacks, but so far so good for Mekhi Sargent.
