The star (and writer, director, producer, and more) of I May Destroy You picked up a statuette at Sunday night’s Emmys 2021 ceremony.

Michaela Coel is officially an Emmy winner. At Sunday night’s Emmys 2021 awards ceremony, the creator of I May Destroy You picked up a statuette in the best-writing-for-a-limited-series category. It’s the first Emmy win for the British auteur, whose dark, deeply empathetic series cut through the noise this year, thanks to Coel’s blisteringly honest portrait of her own experience with sexual assault and living in its devastating aftermath.

Coel ended her thank-you speech by dedicating it “to every single survivor of sexual assault.”

She also gave her speech directly to writers, urging them to “write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that is uncomfortable. I dare you.”

“In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to, in turn, feel the need to be constantly visible—for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success—do not be afraid to disappear,” she continued. “From it, from us, for a while. And see what comes to you in the silence.”

Coel took a moment to thank people on her team and HBO brass, like Casey Bloys, as well. The I May Destroy You multihyphenate was nominated in several categories at Sunday night’s ceremony, including best directing and best lead actress in a limited series.
