Valorie May Canfield, 83, passed away November
24, 2021 at St Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam. Prior to
her passing she was a resident of Fulton Center.
She was born December 8, 1937 in Northville, the
daughter of Ola and Solomon May.
Valorie was a 1955 graduate of Northville Central
School, and was a lifetime resident of the area. She
worked for many years at the Stewart’s Shop in
Northville, and even after her retirement, she could
be found catching up with friends over ice cream in
her favorite booth.
Valorie was a loving mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother. She is survived by her children,
Eugene Brooks (Sue), Nancy Shepherd (John),
Lance Brooks, James May (Ann), Todd May, Rebecca
McCann (James), Megan Czaplinski (Joseph), and
Richard Canfield (Heidi); her grandchildren, Jason,
Damon, Brandon, Alex, Christine, Rachel, Ryan,
Caitlyn, Olivia, Sophia, Matthew, Thomas, Casey,
Richard, and Kyle; and eight great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Carol Guy, and
brother, Roger May, and many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her son, Raymond Canfield
Jr; her sisters, Wilma Ward, Alma Mesick, Janice
Green, and baby Thelma; and her brothers, Rodney
May and Solomon May.
Valorie loved to laugh, and could find humor in
almost any situation. She enjoyed her ice cream
from Stewart’s (peanut butter pandemonium!) She
was a country music fan who, in her younger days,
was quite a good square dancer. Most of all, she
loved children – all children. She was extraordinarily
proud of “her kids” – those in her immediate and
extended family, as well as the dozens of children
she cared for as a babysitter. She will be missed by
many.
Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 30 at the Northville Funeral Home, 401
Bridge Street, Northville, with a funeral to immediately
follow at 1 p.m. Due to Covid concerns, the
family asks that you please wear a mask. Burial will
be at the Edinburg Cemetery, where Valorie will
join her beloved son, Raymond.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to
Sacandaga Helping Hands, PO Box 299, Northville,
who did so much to help Valorie after her strokes.
Condolences may be made to the family online at
