The Dodgers’ starting rotation hasn’t been set yet, but we’re very close to knowing how the five-man rotation will look. Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler and Trevor Bauer were three locks, that was easy. The real question came in regards to the final two spots.
The Dodgers have the deepest starting rotation in baseball, no questions asked. In addition to those three names, the Dodgers also have David Price, Julio Urias, Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May and Jimmy Nelson. All of those guys would be starters on essentially any other team across the league.
On Friday night, manager Dave Roberts said that the final spot is up for grabs between three guys: Price, May and Gonsolin. He said that Nelson will be in the bullpen, meaning Urias has secured that fourth spot in the rotation.
According to Roberts, Price will start against the Angels on Sunday, with Gonsolin following him in relief.
After sitting out the entire 2020 campaign, Price has looked really good so far through the spring. He’s appeared in three games, posting an ERA of 2.70 with four strikeouts. However, as he continues to build his arm up, maybe a role in the bullpen to begin the season would make more sense. Now, that’s not to say he’ll be there all season, but it would be wise if the Dodgers were cautious with his arm as they try and keep him healthy.
May has been arguably the best of the three options this spring. In four outings, he’s posted a 2.63 ERA while striking out 17 hitters in only 13 2⁄3 innings. That number really stands out, as May has a SO/9 of only 7.5 throughout his career. I get that it’s a small sample size, but May’s swing and miss stuff has arguably looked a lot better this spring than it has in years past.
