Movie theater popcorn will flow at Pike Outlets Cinemark with expected opening on Monday - Long Beach Post

After months of having its doors shut to audiences due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Cinemark movie theater at the Pike Outlets, one of the two large-chain venues in the city, is expected to reopen at limited capacity starting Monday.

The city announced Friday that it was following Los Angeles County and moving into the “red” tier of COVID-19 restrictions. A number of businesses, including restaurants, movie theaters, museums and gyms, will be allowed to host customers inside, with some restrictions, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Cinemark spokeswoman Caitlin Piper said the company is opening locations outside of LA County throughout the weekend, but starting Monday, theaters within the county, including the Long Beach location, will open.

To prepare for the reopening, Cinemark staff members will be disinfecting frequently-touched areas and auditoriums between movie showings, according to the company website.

When purchasing tickets, the seats adjacent to the ones picked will be blocked off to limit capacity and keep people socially distant. Under the new guidelines, movie theaters may allow 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less. Concession stands will be open and will offer popcorn and other snacks. Free refill options won’t be allowed. Guests must wear masks when seated in the auditoriums, but they can remove their masks to eat.

As they reopen, theaters will offer some of this year’s newest titles, including “Tom & Jerry: The Movie,” “Chaos Walking,” “Boogie,” “Long Weekend,” “The Courier” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”

The Los Angeles market is one of Texas-based Cinemark’s most important. To reopen more than 10 Los Angeles area theaters by Monday would bring back nearly 90% of Cinemark’s domestic circuit, according to a company statement. Movie theaters both large and small have been heavily impacted by the pandemic’s closures.

Across town, the similarly sized Edwards Regal Theater at the Long Beach Town Center is still closed according to the company’s website. With the pandemic prompting people to stay home, streaming services have captivated much of the audience that big, block-buster films would have snagged last year and the beginning of this year. According to Go Banking Rates, the movie theater industry had a 62% revenue loss between 2019 and 2020.
