The MBTA plans to resume weekday service to Boston on its Charlestown and Hingham ferries starting in late May, the latest step toward reversing service cuts about four months after suspending the routes due to the pandemic’s impact.
MBTA officials on Monday announced the spring 2021 ferry schedule, which takes effect May 22, will include direct service to and from both Charlestown and Hingham for weekday commuters, weekend service on the Hingham/Hull and Charlestown routes, and the resumption of stops at Logan International Airport.
Weekday service will feature 78 trips on the Charlestown route, plus 14 inbound trips from Hingham to Boston and 11 outbound trips from Boston to Hingham. On the Hingham/Hull ferry, weekend service will return with a combination of Hingham- and Hull-bound trips. The Charlestown ferry will run 34 weekend trips.
Both the weekday and weekend Hingham/Hull options will once again feature stops at Logan Airport when the schedule starts.
The agency halted a sizable chunk of its ferry service in January as part of a package of service cuts aimed at reducing spending and better mirroring a period of lower ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since late March, MBTA officials have been scrambling to restore service after facing criticism from the state’s congressional delegation, who helped secure nearly $2 billion in federal stimulus funding that they said was intended to ensure adequate service for bus, train and ferry users.
The ferry changes will arrive more quickly than increased or restored service on several bus lines, which will begin June 20 under a plan unveiled two weeks ago.
The restored service will deliver about 80% of pre-pandemic weekday service. Weekend service, after the schedule boost, will reflect about 68% of the pre-pandemic level.
