As summer draws near, so too do Netflix’s highly-anticipated May offerings. The next project in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster deal with Netflix arrives this month: a biographical series about famed designer Roy Halston starring Ewan McGregor. Also on the horizon is a third season of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, which returns after a four-year hiatus amid sexual misconduct allegations made against the show’s creator and star. Then there’s a third and final season of The Kominsky Method, the Chuck Lorre series starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin that made an awards season splash during its brief run. The title of most anticipated movie of the month belongs to The Woman in the Window, an adaptation of A.J. Finn’s bestselling thriller that casts Amy Adams in the haunting lead role.
And there’s much more content where that came from. Ahead, a list of major releases from Netflix in May.
Back to the Future trilogy (May 1): Marty McFly has transported himself back to Netflix. All three films in Robert Zemeckis’ iconic time-traveling series (1985’s Back to the Future, 1989’s Back to the Future Part II, and 1990’s Back to the Future Part III) star Michael J. Fox as a puffer vest-wearing teenager who leaps from one era to another with ease. He’s joined by the trusty Doc Brown (played with endless charisma by Christopher Lloyd) and a tricked out DeLorean that never loses its onscreen electricity.
Notting Hill (May 1): It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve watched this girl (Julia Roberts) stand in front of a boy (Hugh Grant) with a request to love her—you’ll still want to come armed with a box of tissues. They’re assisted by comedic performances from Rhys Ifans, Emma Chambers, and a pre-Downton Abbey Hugh Bonenville. Plus, it takes the cake for best use of the late Bill Withers’ song “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
Selena: The Series: Part 2 (May 4): The conclusion of Netflix’s Selena Quintanilla biopic series arrives just a few weeks shy of what would have been her 50th birthday. This half of the show, which is produced by members of the Quintanilla family, will chart the making of her first English-language album and the ill-fated friendship that led to her tragic 1995 murder.
The Woman in the Window (May 14): Amy Adams is on another mission to bag her first Oscar. This time, she stars in Joe Wright’s psychological thriller about an agoraphobic woman whose mind plays tricks on her when she witnesses a potential killing. The only thing that could outshine this release, co-starring Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Brian Tyree Henry, is the drama surrounding its disgraced author, Daniel Mallory, and his literary scammer past.
