MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont's spring turkey hunting season is approaching.
This year, the youth and novice turkey hunting weekend is April 24 and 25, followed by the regular season from May 1 to May 31.
To hunt during the youth and novice weekend, hunters must be 15 years old or younger and must have completed a hunter education course and have a hunting license, a turkey hunting license and a free youth turkey hunting tag, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department said.
Hunters 16 years old or older who have purchased a hunting license in the last 12 months may hunt as a novice and also must have a hunting license, turkey hunting license and a free novice tag.
“The youth and novice turkey hunting weekend provides an excellent opportunity for experienced hunters to teach young or new hunters how to safely and successfully hunt wild turkeys,” Chris Bernier, Vermont’s wild turkey biologist, said in a statement.
Youth and novice hunters may take one bearded turkey on the weekend and two in the regular May hunting season.
During the regular season, shooting hours are one half hour before sunrise to noon. Hunters may take two bearded turkeys during the season and use either shotguns or archery equipment.
