Mecosta County parks superintendent Jeff Abel said the parks commission has discussed the possibility of moving the Eiffel Tower to a location that is more accessible to the public.
“It has been discussed for a long time, especially during the off-season months when all the gates are locked,” Abel said during a parks board meeting this week. “The back pond has been drained down a lot, and it is just not as nice a view as it once was where the tower currently is placed.
“Maybe it is time to bring it out of its current location and bring it more to the forefront where people can access it year round,” he added.
Abel said there are couple of locations that have been discussed — one in the grass near the old hatchery building and the other at the playground area near the White Pine Trail.
If it was near the hatchery building, he suggested, visitors coming in from the road to the hatchery building might be encouraged to get out of their car and walk down there and check out the ponds and the tower while they are there. Likewise, if it was close enough to the White Pine Trail, visitors walking through on the trail could take advantage of that.
“We don’t want it to be a drive-by viewing necessarily, but we want it to be more accessible,” Abel said. “We want it far enough back where you have to get out of your car to view it.”
Abel said if it was near the hatchery building, it could be decorated for Halloween and lit up during the Christmas holidays. It could also be a photo destination if, and when, the hatchery building is used for events again.
“We do have $20,000 in our capital budget for next year to rework the front pond, and if we want to use that area for the tower, we could tie that into one project,” Abel said. “I think it would be a fairly simple project to move it, but we will have do some investigation and figure that out.”
The board suggested Abel and his staff continue to consider possible locations and take their finding to the building and grounds committee for further evaluation.
In other business, the board was updated on the following projects:
• Dragon Trail construction is wrapping up for the season. The Davis Bridge section to Brower Park has been completed, and they are hoping to finish another 1,800 feet down river from the bridge to complete the Mecosta Township grant.
• Buckhorn Dam reservoir is being drained in preparation for dam removal.
• Brower Water Access grant has been submitted to the Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund for $281,000. The permit for the water access improvement project has been received from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
• Engineers are working on the final plans for the School Section Lake expansion project.
