Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Matt Smith to join Jodie Whittaker and a slew of former Time Lords to praise NHS staff during BBC's Big Night In

Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Matt Smith are set to reprise their roles as the iconic Time Lords for a special message to honour NHS staff.

Joining forces with Who actors past and presenter, the pair will appear in a message for BBC's Big Night In, set to air ahead of the weekly Clap For Carers on Thursday evening.

This isn't the first time Matt and David have joined forces on Doctor Who, as they delighted fans by appearing in the show's 50th Anniversary Special in 2013.

Along with Matt and David, a slew of other actors who have played the Doctor will appear in the special video message.

Leading them is Jodie Whittaker, who became the first ever Female Doctor when she took over the role in 2018.

Classic Era Doctors Tom Baker (who played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981), Peter Davison (1981 to 1984), Colin Baker (1984 to 1986), Sylvester McCoy (1987 to 1989) and Paul McGann (1996) will also appear in the video.

David played The Doctor from 2005 to 2010, with Matt then taking over the role from 2010 to 2013.

Rounding out the stars are Peter Capaldi (2014 to 2017), and Jo Martin, who made history as the show's first ever black Doctor during its 12th series this year.

Who fans are no stranger to Doctors collaborating, as along with David and Matt appearing together in the 50th Anniversary special, the episode also featured a surprise cameo from Tom.

Back in 1983, The Five Doctors saw Peter Davison appear alongside Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton and Richard Hurndall, who took over the role of the First Doctor following William Hartnell's death.

The special clip will come as part of BBC's three-hour special The Big Night In, which will feature a slew of presenters joining forces to present a night of comedy to keep the nation's spirits high during the lockdown. 

Sir Lenny Henry will host the show alongside Zoe Ball, Paddy McGuinness, Matt Baker and Davina McCall.

The star-studded show will feature musical acts, money can't buy prizes, comedy sketches and lots more surprises on the night. 

It will see Dawn French reprise her role as reverend Geraldine in The Vicar of Dibley for a one-off special.

Peter Kay will also make his return to the spotlight after a two-year break to record a special version of Amarillo with Tony Christie. 

While David Walliams and Matt Lucas are set to revive their comedy Little Britain for the one-off special.

The Big Night In, which brings together Children In Need and Comic Relief - will be filmed from home - adhering to all government imposed social distancing rules.

The Big Night In will air at 7pm on Thursday April 23 on BBC One.
