Upon recovering and arriving back in the US, Tom, 63, and Rita, 63, immediately enrolled in a medical study to determine if their antibodies would be useful for scientists working on developing a vaccine.

Hanks has now revealed that they have now been approved to donate blood because they carry antibodies.

The Cast Away star got off pretty lightly compared to his wife of 32 years, Wilson.

He said: "Rita went through a tougher time than I did.

"She had a much-higher fever and she had some other symptoms. She lost her sense of taste and smell. She got absolutely no joy from food for a better part of three weeks.

"She was so nauseous, she had to crawl on the floor from the bed to the facilities. It lasted a while."

Following their personal fight with the virus, the A-list couple has been looking for more ways to help international efforts to find a vaccine and kick covid-19.

“A lot of the question is, is what now? What do we do now? Is there something we can do? And, in fact, we just found out that we do carry the antibodies.

“We have not only been approached, we have said, ‘Do you want our blood? Can we give plasma?’ And, in fact, we will be giving it now to the places that hope to work on what I would like to call the ‘Hank-ccine’” he told NPR's 'Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!' podcast.

The two were in Australia for the pre-production of Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis Presley film from Warner Bros, when they fell ill.

Hanks is set to play Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker in the project.
