Gogglebox fans defend Joe Wicks as stars claim he's 'cashing in' on coronavirus - Metro.co.uk

Gogglebox fans have defended Joe Wicks after two stars on the show accused the PT of ‘cashing in’ during the coronavirus pandemic.

During the country-wide lockdown, the Body Coach has become a lifeline for many in self-isolation, hosting daily workout sessions on his YouTube channel, where millions have tuned in to stay fit.

But on the latest edition of the Channel 4 reality show, brother and sister Pete and Sophie Sandiford hit out at his new initiative, which didn’t go down too well with viewers at home.

On the episode last night, a clip was shown from an interview, where Joe was asked what it took for him to become ‘the nation’s PE teacher.’

‘Just a webcam,’ Sophie quipped. ‘a youTube channel.’

Her brother added: ‘And capitalising on a pandemic.’

To say that this hit a nerve with fans would be a bit of an understatement, social media was flooded with posts defending Joe, and asking the duo to be a bit kinder with their words.

Regardless of what you think of Joe Wicks, he’s donating 100% of his profits from from his YouTube PE project to the NHS. Not just sitting on a sofa moaning #Gogglebox

‘Regardless of what you think of Joe Wicks he’s a lovely bloke doing something great for the kids,’ one user wrote. ‘So let’s drop the put-downs.’

Backing this point up, another fan added: ‘They don’t usually get it wrong on Gogglebox but the tone of them all slagging off Joe Wicks is really mean.’

Adding that Joe’s workouts are currently ‘keeping me sane’ during the lockdown, someone else commented that: ‘The man is a hero. I usually love Gogglebox but I was not impressed.’

It wasn’t all bad news on the programme however, as fans were soon in stitches after another TV-watching star, Lee Riley, ripped his jeans trying to keep up with the workout.

Rule number one, Lee hun…don’t work out in jeans!

Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
