Gogglebox star Jonathan Tapper was left fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus and was left ‘heaving with every breath’.

Jonathan, 52, also has diabetes, a condition which can mean sufferers have a much more severe reaction to coronavirus.

His wife, Nikki, told the Daily Star: ‘One night Jonathan came home from work and was unable to move.

‘He had a cough and high temperature. He laid down on the sofa and – with no exaggeration – he stayed there for two weeks in our lounge room.’

Jonathan was ‘still too sick’ to speak about his ordeal himself, and is said to be afraid of relapsing as he continues to battle the virus.

The family had been advised by his doctor to look after him at home but to get a pulse oximeter to measure his oxygen levels at home.

His whole family have been infected by coronavirus, and feared that they may lose him as his symptoms worsened.

Nikki added: ‘I rushed downstairs and couldn’t believe how pale he was, heaving with every breath.

‘I tried to keep calm, asking him all the time if he could breathe. I felt that I couldn’t think straight because I was so unwell myself at the time too.’

She maintained a vigil at his bedside through the night, monitoring his oxygen levels and speaking to the NHS helpline on 111.

Jonathan currently resting at home in order to get back to full health.

He had lost three stone in 12 weeks last year after being diagnosed with diabetes, going from 21st 3lb to 18st 8lb.

The UK is currently in its fourth week of lockdown and there have been over 114,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and over 15,000 deaths from the virus.

People with pre-existing conditions including diabetes and heart disease and the elderly are most at risk of complications from Covid-19, but it can affect people of all ages.
