Val Kilmer admits he didn't want to be in the original Top Gun but begged to be in the sequel - Daily Mail

Val Kilmer admits he didn't want to be in the original Top Gun... but he begged for a role in Top Gun: Maverick

It was only his third film role and helped establish him as a pro at drama and action roles.

Yet Val Kilmer only begrudgingly auditioned for 1986's Top Gun and never had any interest in the project.

The 60-year-old actor revealed his disinterest for the role of Iceman in his new book I'm Your Huckleberry: A Memoir, in which he also reveals he had to beg to get a part in the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

In the moment: Val Kilmer, 60, revealed he wasn't interested in Top Gun (1986) and even tried to sabotage his audition in his new memoir I'm Your Huckleberry, out now; still from Top Gun

In the book, which is out now, Val writes that he had to be talked into showing up for a Top Gun audition.

'I didn’t want the part. I didn’t care about the film. The story didn’t interest me,' he wrote. 'My agent, who also represented Tom Cruise, basically tortured me into at least meeting Tony Scott saying he was one of the hottest directors in town.'

The Heat star went so far as to self-sabotage when he got to the audition by 'looking like a fool or the goon' and barely putting in effort.

'I read the lines indifferently and yet, amazingly, I was told I had the part. I felt more deflated than inflated,' he continued. 'I had to get out of there.'

Val played the major role of LT Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, whose by-the-book attitude clashed with LT Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, played by the movie's star, Tom Cruise.

Bad actor: Val even gave a bad audition to get out of doing the film. 'I read the lines indifferently and yet, amazingly, I was told I had the part,' he wrote; publicity still for Top Gun

Kilmer may have been ambivalent about the project, but he expressed his admiration for Cruise.

'From day one he was laser-focused on a singular goal: to become the greatest action hero in the history of film. He was up nights learning lines, he spent every waking hour perfecting his stunts. His dedication was admirable,' he wrote.

'Tom is a comrade I respect and admire, though as creatures we hail from galaxies far, far away from one another.'

Later in the book, Val revealed that he wasn't originally contacted to be part of the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

Despite his initial hesitations, his memories of making the movie were fond enough that he approached the producers about a part in the movie.

'As the Temptations sang, "Ain’t too proud to beg." I’d not only contact the producers but create heartrending scenes with Iceman. Forget the fact that 30 years had passed … I remembered it like it was yesterday,' he wrote.

'The producers went for it. Cruise went for it. Cruise couldn’t have been cooler. And the next thing I knew I was back. Tom and I took up where we left off. As far as the film’s plot goes, I’m sworn to secrecy.'

Romantic pain: Val's memoir also delves into his romantic entanglements. He calls his separation from Darryl Hannah his 'most painful split'; pictured in 2013

All alone: The actor also claimed to have not had a serious partner in decades. 'I haven't had a girlfriend in 20 years. The truth is I am lonely part of every day,' he wrote; shown in November

Val's memoir also delves into his various romantic entanglements.

He reveals that his separation from actress Darryl Hannah was his 'most painful split' out of many, and that he fell in love with Angelina Jolie during the filming of Oliver Stone's Alexander, but she lost interest and fell in love with Brad Pitt shortly after the shoot ended.
