Annual tournament raises money for scholarships
The New Mexico Landmen’s Association is a regional nonprofit based in Roswell with almost 200 members, and is part of the American Association of Professional Landmen.
Jack Richardson, president of the association, recently discussed the organization’s goals, programs, and the much-anticipated golf tournament being held next month to raise money for the NMLA educational scholarship.
Richardson said the nonprofit’s members are passionate about the community. That can be seen in charitable work and contributions.
“Our goal is to promote ethical standards, professional development, community outreach, and general education regarding what a landman does in the oil, gas, mineral, renewable, and other energy industries,” Richardson said. “A landman is a professional that secures the right to develop energy resources. This can be done by conducting title research to determine property ownership, negotiating leases, buying/selling property, mineral rights, and royalties.
“Historically, landmen work for oil and gas companies, but recently we have also seen them branch into other types of energy.”

Richardson has lived most of his life in New Mexico. It was a personal connection that brought him into the industry.
“My dad was a landman,” he said, “and he taught me the trade. I’ve worked all over New Mexico and have seen firsthand the abundance of natural resources we have. It was a few years ago that I relocated to Roswell to be closer to the world-class Permian Basin.”
This is one of the most well-studied geologic regions in the world. Noted for its rich petroleum, natural gas, and potassium deposits, the basin has continued to be one of the largest, most economically important assets in the United States.
Of membership in the NMLA, Richardson said, “I’m happy to be president of an organization like this for many reasons. Not only do we promote landmen in New Mexico, but we give back to the community.”
One way the landmen give back is by holding a golf tournament for the past 20-plus years that helps youth in this area.
“NMLA has been hosting this golf tournament for over two decades, with the main purpose being to raise money for the NMLA Scholarship Fund,” Richardson said. “In the last five years alone, NMLA has given out over $50,000 dollars to students, helping fund increasingly expensive college or trade school tuition.
“We also give priority to students who come from an oil and gas background or who are getting a degree with an oil and gas focus.”
This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 15, at 8 a.m. at Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River.

Although the event is typically reserved for the industry and sponsors, Richardson said “there are sometimes available spots as the deadline approaches for the public.”
When it comes to the pandemic, the NMLA has experienced its share of troubles and concerns.
“This has been a tough last twelve months for all of us,” Richardson said. “The Oil & Gas industry got hit hard for many reasons. Not only did the communities in the Permian and San Juan Basin feel the impact, but the entire state felt this, and will continue to feel this for years to come. We are absolutely thrilled, however, to be able to host events like this again and show the community that NMLA is here to support education as much as we can.
“We could have easily canceled this event, but we wanted to do something. I think in general, most people want to be out and about, doing what they can to help, stimulating the economy, increasing demand and getting things back to normal.”
Richardson thanked all the sponsors who donated to the event and the scholarship fund. “We also want to encourage as many people to apply for these scholarships as possible. They are available for both college and trade schools, and you can apply on our website at www.nm-landman.org and click on the ‘Scholarship’ link.”
The deadline for Fall 2021 scholarships has not yet expired; those interested can still apply by Friday, April 30.
