Margot Robbie, aka Harley Quinn herself, told Digital Spy that she wanted Birds of Prey's "storytelling devices to reflect Harley's personality herself. So we have a nonlinear storyline, we jump around in time, she'll forget to introduce you to people, jump in and she'll give her version of events when what you're seeing on screen is totally different."
The result is a fresh take on a predictable genre. After all, Harley Quinn is an unreliable narrator if ever there was one.
But an unintended consequence of this approach to storytelling is that in addition to feelings of 'wow, what did I just see!' are 'wow, what did I just see??'
Note: There are, as the headline reveals, spoilers below.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn tells the journey of all five of its anti-heroes in bits and pieces thanks to Harley Quinn's fragmented point of view.
First and foremost, the titular emancipated lady herself, Harley Quinn. We start the movie with her in the throes of her break up with Joker, or "Mr J" as she calls him, which causes her to lose the immunity that her relationship provided her.
As a result, all manner of enemies are after her and Harley is barely scraping by to survive. That's when she gets caught up in Roman Sionis' mess.
Sionis, aka Black Mask, is the disowned son of a major crime family who has taken a small corner of the east side of Gotham City for his own. What he wants more than anything else? Power – and money. To get this, he needs the Bertinelli diamond.
Inscribed in the diamond are the codes to the Bertinelli family bank accounts. The whole Bertinelli clan had been wiped out by a rival mafia family bankrolled by Sionis, save for one person: Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress.
Spotted alive by one of the henchmen, she was rescued and taken in by his relatives in Sicily and raised to be an assassin, with her sole goal to exact revenge on the people who murdered her family. She's returned to Gotham City and is picking them off one by one.
Detective Renee Montoya is on the case of these murdered hitmen and, despite her personal life being a mess, she's very good at her job. Unfortunately, the powers that be keep taking credit for her work and getting their own promotions, leaving Montoya stuck at Detective level.
In addition to these murders, she's also hot on the trail of Roman Sionis. Montoya knows there's something big brewing, and needs the help of someone on the inside to figure out how Sionis plans to get the Bertinelli diamond – and who he plans to kill.
Enter Dinah Laurel Lance, aka Black Canary, a singer at Sionis' club promoted to his personal driver. Montoya tries to get Dinah to become her informant, but she's having none of it. Why?
Well, her mother – from whom she inherited her Black Canary title and powers – used to work with Gotham City Police, but was left to die alone on the streets, and thus Dinah became an orphan without an ounce of help from the people for whom her mother died.
Though she projects a hard heart, Dinah has a soft spot for a girl, Cassandra, who lives in her building in the care (or lack thereof) of a foster family, but is often in trouble with the law as a prolific pickpocket.
Cassandra steals the Bertinelli Diamond from Roman, not knowing the secret message it holds nor the things he'll do to get it – mainly, putting a $500,000 bounty on her head. This sends Gotham City's underbelly to the surface, chasing after Cassandra.
But Harley, in an attempt to buy protection from Roman, agrees to get Cassandra herself, unaware of the publicly-available bounty and the competition she's going up against.
So, we have Harley with Cassandra (who, surprise, has swallowed the diamond!). Meanwhile, Black Canary overhears Roman putting the hit out on Cassandra, so she calls Montoya, hoping the now suspended detective will come to the rescue.
Roman sends his right-hand man Zsasz with Black Canary to the funhouse where Harley has promised she'll hand over the diamond and Cassandra – alive, but Zsasz spots her message to Montoya and decides to kill Black Canary and gut Cassandra for the diamond.
Little do they know Huntress is on their tails – Zsasz was one of the men who murdered her family – and so, within a matter of moments, they all converge on the funhouse where Harley and Cassandra are holed up. Zsasz tranquillises Harley, but before he can do any worse, Huntress arrives and kills him.
Montoya arrives and realises Huntress is the vigilante she was hunting for the murder of the hitmen at the outset of the film, and informs Huntress it was Roman who paid for the murder of her family. Harley hits on the brilliant idea that to get out alive, they need to team up.
Hidden in the funhouse is a cache of weapons and costumes – after a quick change and gear up, the women head outside where dozens of riff-raff are there to kill them all, and get Cassandra. They almost getaway, but Roman manages to snatch Cassandra while the women are pinned down.
Black Canary uses her Canary Cry to incapacitate the remaining baddies, and Harley – in her rollerskates – chases after them. Using her motorcycle, Huntress gives Harley a tow. A car chase ensues, and Harley chases Roman and Cassandra onto a pier.
Harley fires her last shot and misses, but Cassandra reveals she stole a grenade at the funhouse and has placed it on Roman's person. He panics, Harley pushes him into the river and he explodes into bloody pieces.
But wait, that's not where this tale ends.
The women all go to get tacos, and Cassandra finally leaves to... eject the diamond. She asks Harley for help. While the two are in the bathroom, Huntress, Montoya, and Black Canary discuss becoming a vigilante group together with Harley and Cassandra, cleaning up Gotham from the inside out.
Just then, Dinah realises Harley and Cassandra have stolen her car and driven off down the street.
Despite this setback, Black Canary, Montoya, and Huntress go on to form the Birds of Prey. Meanwhile, Cassandra and Harley go into business together – as "badass motherf**kers". Awwwww yeaaaaaah.
This gives each character an arc – moving from self-centred survival instinct to understanding that there's safety, and acceptance, in numbers. Cassandra and Harley form a bond, while Dinah, Renee, and Helena also become a sisterhood in their own right.
Oh, and as for the post-credits scene? Well, it's more of a tease. After sitting through the credits, audiences are delighted to Harley mocking them for staying and offering this tidbit: "did you know Batman f–"
Yep, that's it! In true Harley Quinn fashion, she has left you wanting more. So, will we get a Birds of Prey 2? We can only hope.
Birds of Prey is out now in UK and US cinemas.
