Heartbroken Caroline Flack sought solace in first series of Love Island after painful split - Irish Mirror

Caroline Flack sought solace following her heartbreaking split with Jack Street by completely immersing herself in the world of Love Island .

The presenter, who tragically took her own life on February 15, loved everything about the show that propelled her to huge fame.

While Caroline had already taken on a number of presenting gigs, it was the ITV2 dating show that really made her a household name.

But while Caroline was helping the Islanders along their quest for true love, she was battling her own heartache.

The star had gone through a painful split from boyfriend Jack.

She began dating the manager of singer Sam Smith back in 2014, and they moved in together after just eight months.

But it all went horribly wrong.

For one, Jack was rumoured to be pursuing Glee star Dianna Agron.

And when he tweeted one night urging his followers to vote for Caroline on Strictly Come Dancing - which she won in 2014 with Pasha Kovalev - Caroline fired back.

In a tweet she later deleted, she wrote: "@jackb_street easing your guilt??? Fill yourself with GLEE Jack."

Jack dumped Caroline in the run-up to the Strictly final - another thing she blasted him for.

She wrote in her autobiography Storm In A C Cup: "He [Jack] had seen me come back from losing Xtra Factor . Now I was finally finding my feet. I felt that he could at least have waited three weeks… and I wept. Pasha understood. He knew the reason. My private life was in shreds."

Despite that initial heartache, Caroline and Jack got back together, but it quickly went wrong once more.

The presenter was left devastated when, while she was preparing for the red carpet launch of X Factor for her first time hosting the main ITV1 show with Olly Murs, Sam Smith shared a picture of Jack sitting next to someone reported to be his new girlfriend.

Caroline was not happy.

She shared a picture of herself next to a glitterball, writing: "When someone who knows you more than anyone ruins the biggest day of your life."

She later deleted it.

But one person who knew Caroline better than most, her friend Danny Bell, says she used Love Island to escape her heartache when she headed out to Majorca a few months later, relocating to Spain for the entirety of the series.

In a candid first-person piece for Grazia , TV producer Danny talked about how his friend sought solace while working on the show.

Danny, who was involved in making the show, wrote: "Caroline had decided to come and live on the island with the crew for the whole six weeks, even though she didn't have to be there the whole time. But she'd made her mind up.

"The reality of why she'd packed her case for the summer was that she was running away from her life. She was still getting over a break-up, and was dealing with that in the way a lot of people do, by dyeing her hair blonde, living on a diet of wine and chips and getting off with the wrong people.

"In her mind, Love Island was an escape."

Danny says part of his job was "babysitting" Caroline and that Sarah, the show's executive producer, had a knack for getting Caroline to "switch it on" for the cameras.

Danny added: "But the way I'm going to remember her isn't as a victim. It's as an absolute powerhouse who unapologetically lived her life the way she wanted to live."
