CAROLINE FLACK'S assault case was formally shelved 10 days after the TV star’s tragic death.
The Love Island host, 40, took her own life after being charged with assaulting boyfriend Lewis Burton, 27.
Caroline was found hanged at her home in Stoke Newington, North East London, on February 15.
She had pleaded not guilty to assault by beating and was due to go on trial on March 4, but killed herself hours after learning prosecutors had decided to press ahead with the case.
The popular TV host had strongly denied the charge and her family and management slammed the CPS for pursuing the case despite Lewis saying he didn't support the prosecution.
A CPS spokesperson told The Sun Online: “Court proceedings against Caroline Flack came to an official end on February 25.”
CASE CLOSED
To close the case, a death certificate had to be presented to Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court in North London where Caroline first appeared on December 23 last year.
The CPS spokesperson added: "By law we had to give formal evidence to the clerk of the court that the defendant was deceased.
"We had to provide a death certificate as a record that the defendant was deceased.
"Despite media coverage of Caroline’s death and public comments made by her family about her death we needed to make this a formality to close the case.
'TOO MUCH FOR HER'
"It is a formality that had to be be done and now has been.”
CPS lawyers decided to prosecute Caroline even after Lewis asked police not to proceed.
A court had previously heard Caroline hit him over the head with a lamp.
An inquest into her death last week heard was told police attended after being flagged down near her home and gave CPR at the scene in a desperate bid to save her.
Within 24 hours my whole world and future was swept from under my feet and all the walls that I had taken so long to build around me, collapsed.
Caroline's heartbreaking Instagram message
Caroline's mum Chris said her daughter had been "surrounded by love" but the impending trial had been "too much for her".
Describing an unpublished Instagram post released by her family her mum said: "It was describing how she was feeling and what she had gone through - no more than that.
"It was not blaming anyone or pointing any fingers."
In the post, Caroline wrote about the night she was arrested after allegedly assaulting boyfriend Lewis.
She said: "Within 24 hours my whole world and future was swept from under my feet and all the walls that I had taken so long to build around me, collapsed.
"I have always taken responsibility for what happened that night. Even on the night.
"But the truth is. It was an accident. I am not a domestic abuser."
It has emerged that the Met Police could face investigation by their watchdog over contact with star before her death.
