Why Prince Harry dropped his royal title in sweet nod to 'rebel' Princess Diana revealed - Express

The Sussexes are due to quit royal duties in a matter of weeks as they begin a new working life in North America, in a bid to be “financially independent” of the crown. Now, royal author Leslie Carroll has revealed that the reason for Harry’s transition away from the monarchy, is inspired by his late mother Princess Diana, who also distanced herself from people that tried to “micromanage” her life.

Ms Carroll exclusively told Express.co.uk that Harry has taken great “displeasure” from the treatment toward his wife Meghan Markle from members of the royal family and palace aides.

She revealed: “[Harry’s] displeasure at the way his wife and son were being treated by the press, by other members of the royal family perhaps, and by some of the “Men in Gray” as Princess Diana used to call the bureaucrats in the palace who sought to micromanage her life and her decisions.”

The author of 'American Princess: The Love Story of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry' suggested that the dramatic steps that lead to “just call me Harry”, stem from issues the Duke had witnessed his mother Princess Diana face while she maintained a royal title following Prince Charles divorce.

She added: “Harry has always been acutely conscious of the way his mother was hounded and hunted by the press, and he has been equally outspoken saying that he will not let history repeat itself with his wife and son.”

Prince Harry has frequently been under the microscope growing up in the glare of the media after his mother passed away, he endured a rocky adolescence and a “wild” young adulthood that saw him partying hard.

Ms Carroll believes that although the Prince has settled down with a family, he is still the “rebel” of the Royal Family who will fight for those he cares about.

She continued: “Harry was once the wild child of the Windsors and many in the media seem to be unable to cope with the Harry who is now the responsible adult.

“Diana would have been so proud of him for doing this. And ironically the prince who was such a rebel as a youth is proving he’s still a rebel.”

The shock announcement to drop his royal title was delivered on stage at Edinburgh Waverly station on Tuesday night, prior to the Duke speaking at an eco-tourism conference on Wednesday.

Former Labour advisor and broadcaster Ayesha Hazarika, introduced Harry to the crowd, telling delegates: “He’s made it clear that we are all just to call him Harry.

“So ladies and gentlemen, please give a big, warm, Scottish welcome to Harry.”

It comes after Meghan and Harry said they will no longer be formally using their HRH titles after stepping down as senior royals.

There have been tense negotiations over the couples “Sussex Royal” branding that appears on their website and social media.

The pair had spent thousands trademarking the name to use on various merchandising and documentation.

However, from March 31st Meghan and Harry will no longer have the authority to use the term “royal” for any promotional material or appearances.

A statement on their Sussex Royal website reads: “While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal.’

“For the above reason, the trademark applications that had been filed as protective measures and that reflected the same standard trademarking requests as done for The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have been removed.”

The statement continued: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

From April 1, instead of undertaking engagements in support of the Queen, they will be represented via their UK foundation, according to their spokesperson.

No further information has been issued about the couple's new charitable organisation, but it is thought there will be a particular focus on the community, youth empowerment, and mental health.

Meanwhile, the couple’s fired aides are reportedly not to be considered for any other role within Buckingham Palace.

The closure meant 15 staff were made redundant and The Sun has claimed that the royal couple is now discussing redundancy packages for a “clean break.”
