Disney boss confirms Star Wars status after Rise of Skywalker - digitalspy.com

Disney is officially putting the Star Wars movies on the back-burner for now.

The House of Mouse is coming off both Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Rise of Skywalker delivering disappointing box office figures, the latter of which may have been expected by Disney.

While Disney was once planning to alternate Star Wars and Avatar movies every year, Disney CEO Bob Iger preempted The Rise of Skywalker by warning it would likely be followed by a "bit of a hiatus".

At a shareholder meeting on Tuesday (February 4), Iger confirmed that a Star Wars movie "hiatus" has now officially begun.

He added: "The priority [for the franchise] in the next few years is television."

Disney has several TV projects in the works for its streaming service Disney+, which is launching in the UK and other Western European countries next month.

The second season of The Mandalorian is currently in production and will be arriving on Disney+ this autumn, in addition to a Rogue One prequel show with Cassian Andor also in the works.

Recent rumours also suggested that Ewan McGregor's return to Star Wars for an Obi-Wan Kenobi series was facing production delays, though he has since dismissed any such talk.

"We just pushed the shoot to the beginning of next year," he told TheWrap. "The scripts are really good. I saw 90% of the writing and I really liked it. All this bullshit about creative differences and all that stuff is, none of it [is] true."

Additional Star Wars TV projects for Disney+ have also been teased by Lucasfilm.
