Joaquin Phoenix says 'go vegan' and ties himself to bridge in dramatic protest - Irish Mirror

Joaquin Phoenix strongly encouraged Brits to become vegan by taking to the streets of London as part of an animal rights protest group on Sunday.

The Hollywood star, who has been a vegetarian since the age of three, showed how serious he was about the cause by tying himself to one of the capital's most recognised landmarks, Tower Bridge, to ensure his message was felt.

The 45-year old star teamed up with activist organisation Animal Equality, who let down a huge 390 square-foot banner over the bridge, which said: 'Factory farming is destroying our planet. Go vegan.'

Sporting a black hoodie with the words 'animal equality' in white writing on the chest and down his arm, Joaquin was also seen handing out leaflets and interacting with members of the public, asking them about their diets and sharing information.

He joined his fellow activists in holding placards with statements about animal agriculture and climate change.

The star was in the UK for the British Academy Film Awards, and he took part in the protest just hours before he attended the star-studded event, where his Oscar-nominated film Joker picked up three awards, including a personal win for Leading Actor following his much lauded performance in the movie.

"I think we have a personal responsibility to take action right now and one way that we can mitigate climate change is by adjusting our consumption and by going plant-based," he said about his passion for encouraging people to embark on a vegetarian lifestyle.

"I feel sometimes like it's not being talked about enough. So I'm just encouraging people to learn more about eating plant-based and to make a difference to make whatever personal impact they can on the climate emergency."

Later at the BAFTAs, where Joaquin swapped his hoodie for a slick tuxedo, he was part of a protest of a different kind.

He condemned the lack of diversity in the ceremony as he collected the Leading Actor award for his role in Joker.

He said: “I feel conflicted, because so many of my fellow actors, who are so deserving, don’t have that privilege.

“I think that we send a very clear message to people of colour, that you’re not welcome here.

“I think that’s the message that we’re sending.”

Host Graham Norton added to the message with a sardonic joke, saying: “I think 2019 will be remembered as the year white men finally broke through – we did it!

“I mean, 11 nominations for Joker, which is about a white man, who makes himself even whiter.”
