Prince William furious over ‘all-white Bafta nominations’ and could make incendiary speech - Express

The Bafta’s are due to be hosted by Graham Norton in London’s Royal Albert Hall. However according to the Sun on Sunday Prince William has raised the lack of racial diversity with Bafta chief executive Amanda Berry.

The paper also reports the Prince could reference this in his speech at the event in a move which could embarrass organisers.

Prince William will be speaking in his capacity of Bafta’s President.

There is an absence of ethnic minority nominations for leading actress, leading actor, supporting actress and supporting actor.

These are widely regarded as the top four categories in the awards.

Speaking to the Sun on Sunday royal sources said Prince William is deeply concerned.

One commented: “He supports Bafta but is concerned and disappointed.

“He recognises there is so much talent in the industry, so for all the nominations to be white again isn’t good enough.

“It’s not about one year in isolation. It’s about the fact we’re having this conversation every year.

Black British director Steve McQueen said the Bafta’s need to do more to support all UK talent.

Addressing the Sun on Sunday he said: “After a while you get a bit fed up with it.

“Because if the Bafta’s are not supporting Birtish talent, if you’re not supporting the people who are making headway in the industry, then I don’t understand what you are there for.

Singer Cynthia Erivo also refused to perform at the event.

She commented: “I think that it’s important to make it known that it’s not something that you just throw in as a party trick.”

Many of Hollywoods biggest stars will be in the Albert Hall for the awards ceremony.

They are expected to include Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Joaquin Phoenix, Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson.

Prince William has been dealing with the fallout of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex standing down from senior royal life.

Instead they plan to split their time between North America and Britain whilst bidding to become financially independence.

Bafta Palace declined to comment on the story.
