Coronavirus: Dame Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again sales soar after Queen's speech - Sky News

Music is keeping many upbeat as the UK's lockdown continues - and it seems Dame Vera Lynn's wartime classic We'll Meet Again is one of the songs helping people through.

After the Queen's reference to the song in her address to the nation in response to the coronavirus crisis, sales have increased by a massive 580% so far week-on-week, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Queen has delivered a historic address to the nation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Famous for the lyric, ''We'll meet again, Don't know where, Don't know when, But I know we'll meet again some sunny day," the song is a positive reminder of being able to see family and friends again once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

The Queen's reference to the song came after Dame Vera's 103rd birthday in March, which she marked with an uplifting message urging fans to "keep smiling and keep singing".

As a nod to the "difficult times" the nation is currently facing due to the outbreak, the Forces' Sweetheart also posted a short burst of a new video for her signature tune.

The Official Charts figures are based on download sales from digital retailers including iTunes and Amazon.

The Charts also identified a link between the centenarian and current chart queen Dua Lipa, who has three top 10 singles in the chart this week.

More from Covid-19

It is a feat only ever achieved by one English female singer before - Dame Vera, on the first ever official singles chart on 14 November 1952, with Forget Me Not, The Homing Waltz and Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart.

At the time of writing, We'll Meet Again is sitting at number 24 on the iTunes chart, and Spotify has also recorded an increase in streaming of the track, up by 209% week-on-week.

In her historic address to the nation on Sunday, the Queen drew on her experience of wartime spirit to call on the country to "remain united and resolute" to overcome the coronavirus crisis.

In her message, recorded at Windsor Castle, she said: "We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return.

"We will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again."

With Prime Minister Boris Johnson being treated for coronavirus in intensive care, the government is now working out how and when to end the UK lockdown, which has been in place for more than a fortnight.

Dominic Raab, Mr Johnson's stand-in, has refused to confirm whether a decision on easing restrictions will be taken on Easter Monday - and has suggested it could be delayed.
